Kretinga is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania and the most interesting district not only in Western Lithuania, but also throughout the country. The first time it was mentioned in 1253 as a castle Cretyn .
It is located 12 km east of the popular Baltic Sea resort town Palanga, and about 25 km north of Lithuania's 3rd largest city and principal seaport, Klaipėda.
Municipality of Kretinga covers 991 km of raised face area. In Kretinga district settles cities of Kretinga and Salantai, towns of Darbenai and Kartena and also 190 villages. Population in Kretinga Municipality - 44032 in Kretinga – 20776.
There are about 745 cultural heritage objects in Kretinga district.
Kretinga Manor dates from the 16th century. There is a church of the visitation of lord to the blessed Virgin Mary with Lourdes close to it wich was built in 1933 according to the example of the Lourdes in France. There are five monasteries in a city. Churches in Salantai, Kartena, Kalnalis, Budriai are also worth mentioning.
In 2010 there was restored the St James cross in Kartena according to the origin from the XIX century. The cross is 5 meters 40 centimeters in height decorated with symbols of pilgrims.
The Museum of Orvydai Homestead is a unique open air museum of modern, sacral and mystic art.
There are plenty of stones of various forms, sculptures, crosses, stems of old trees and other huge exhibits that are being changed by natural forces also. The homestead became a symbol of sacral and religious convictions.
